Helping you to...manage symptoms of IBS

Dealing with
Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a chronic condition characterised by symptoms such as stomach pains, cramps, bloating, and irregular bowel movements.

The exact cause of IBS is unknown, but stress, trauma, and emotional distress are believed to play significant roles. The bowel becomes hypersensitive, leading to spasms, irregular bowel movements and/or discomfort.

Multiple international studies have shown* that hypnotherapy can help combat these and other symptoms, not only in significantly reducing symptom triggers, but also with improving self confidence, alleviating stress, improving the body's response to digestive stimuli, reducing discomfort and boosting overall gut health.

* A metastudy (2015) concluded "Collectively this body of research shows unequivocally that for both adults and children with IBS, hypnosis treatment is highly efficacious in reducing bowel symptoms and can offer lasting and substantial symptom relief for a large proportion of patients who do not respond adequately to usual medical treatment approaches."
Palsson, O. S. (2015). Hypnosis Treatment of Gastrointestinal Disorders: A Comprehensive Review of the Empirical Evidence. American Journal of Clinical Hypnosis, 58(2), 134–158. doi:10.1080/00029157.2015.1039

The treatment results are exciting and long-lasting, most patients report term relief from symptoms long after completing hypnotherapy sessions. Hypnosis helps by employing deep relaxation techniques to alleviate stress (a known trigger for IBS symptoms), visualisation techniques and positive stress response strategies.

I speak of personal experience! The improved quality of one's life cannot be understated, as the effects of IBS generally permeate - and often dominate - many aspects of daily life.

Generally a series of five sessions, spread over 2- 3 months, is sufficient to alleviate or - as in most cases - banish symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

A unique approach

Due to the personal nature of therapy, it's difficult to prescribe simply a "one size fits all" approach for a specific issue. My approach involves a blend of various therapy techniques, tailored specifically to provide you with the support and guidance that I feel would benefit you.

If you have any questions about the modalities mentioned below, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

FRAMEWORKS & MODALITIES:

  • What can I expect to invest?
After the free consultation, every session* (including the longer introduction) is charged at £115 (€135), or £103.50 if you commit to 5 sessions at once (£517.50 / €675). My sessions tend to take between 1h - 1h30 and you will receive an email afterwards recapping what we discussed and agreed, as well as a copy of the recording if there is one. What you will also be investing in is time, attention and the intention to better your state of wellbeing. The attitude you bring to the treatment is enormously important. A client/therapist relationship is fundamentally collaborative: we work together to help you make the changes you would like to see in your life. The more positive and motivated you are, and the more time you invest outside the therapy room implementing what we discussed, the quicker you will feel the results. Your role in this process is more vital than mine, I am just your guide in this process. * Be aware if you are surfing around to compare prices that a typical ‘therapy hour’ lasts only 50 minutes elsewhere.

  • Can I pay using private medical healthcare?
An increasing number of private medical insurers and Private Health Cash Plans in the UK cover hypnotherapy so it is worth checking whether it is included in your plan. Those which do will usually recognise CNHC registration for reimbursement, of which I am a member. Always check with your insurance provider first as specific levels of coverage and annual limits may apply.
